Chapter 7: Who is Dead in the White House?
• Lincoln lives with rumors of abduction and assassination
• Threatening letters arrived in the mail daily
• Lincoln tells friends that he had a dream of his own death
• Lincoln carries on with his every day life
• Lincoln takes Mary to the Ford theater for the play Our American Cousin
• During the third act, and bodyguard away from his post, John Wilkes Booth enters and shoots Lincoln in the head
• Booth, a well known actor jumps from Lincoln’s box to the stage and shouts “Sic semper tyrannis” (Thus always to tyrants)
• Doctors attended to the president’s wound throughout the night
• Lincoln passes at 7:22 A.M. on April 15
• A funeral train embarked to major cities and places Lincoln had traveled and finally to Springfield
• Tens of thousands gathered as the train pulled in
• The contents of Lincoln’s pockets had been passed down through his bloodline and wasn’t revealed until 1976
